Green Is Sexy: New Light Rail Train in Buenos Aires

One thing expats tend to complain alot about here in Buenos Aires is the noisy, polluting bus transportation system. Sure, it's cheap and convenient for the most part, but where's the green? Shouldn't they (the Argentine government) be doing something about this?
Well, they are trying. The first step? A brand new light rail line that runs along Puerto Madero and a stretch of the river. Hooray!
The sleek trains are ground-hugging and tree-hugging. Plus, they're ultra-modern--the latest technology!--and from France....ooh la la!
I hope we get more of these here in Buenos Aires. As a former Portlander, I am a big fan of light rail and I can squint my eyes and picture a fabulously elegant and mindfully green series of light rail lines criss-crossing this city in style.
The Puerto Madero test line is a good start. Next up: the mayor has announced a plan to test a Rapid Transit System bus line in Palermo similar to one in the famously green city of Curitiba, Brazil. Think designated bus lanes, special signals, very direct and sensible routes, and an overall awareness of streamlined service.
Buenos Aires is the kind of place that COULD take the idea of eco-transit and really run with it. Let's look forward to some innovation and smooth, green, sexy rides.
